rare antique wood shaft deep groove golf club - mashie - c1915-1920

A rare find - a deep groove mashie - It indicates it is a Model 2A - likely made by Macgregor or Burke. Ben Sayers of North Berwick Scotland designed the first of the successful deep groove, or corrugated face irons. Forged by Hendry & Bishop in Edinburgh, it was registered and introduced in late 1913. Deep groove clubs were made illegal for play by the R & A in 1922- likely because they put too much spin on the ball or perhaps even that they chewed up the golf balls of the day. This iron says on the back "Special 2A MashieWarranted Hand forged" . The head is in very good condition with clear markings. The shaft is solid with an old leather grip in good condition. Deep groove irons are great display/converstion items in any wood shaft golf club collection - A nice unusual wood shaft golf iron with a low starting price and a low reserve.
